Dr. Akbar Panju

Dr. Panju is a Professor of Medicine at McMaster University and Chief of Medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences. He is the recipient of the Medard DeGroote Chair in Medicine and he is also a Medical Director of the Medard DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care. Dr. Panju has been the recipient of the National Osler Award from the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine and is also the recipient of the Sibley Award from McMaster University . After graduating from the University of Liverpool in 1974, Dr. Panju completed his internship and then did four years of general practice in Northern Ontario , and in Cambridge , Ontario and this was followed by residency training in Internal Medicine at McMaster University with special training in Cardiology, Thrombosis and Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Panju' s interests are in research in Cardiology and Thrombosis with a particular focus in chest pain. Recently he has been involved with post-stroke central pain where he is working to develop an international centre for patients with post-stroke central pain. Dr. Panju has been the recipient of multiple peer reviewed research awards and his publications have included 46 articles mostly in peer reviewed journals. Dr. Panju is also on the editorial board of the American College of Physicians Journal and the Evidence Based Medicine Journal. He has been a frequent reviewer for CMAJ, the British Medical Journal and the Journal of the American Medical Association.
